Rick Blood

2025 Republican Candidate for East Pennsboro School Board Director, 2 year term

Rick Blood was born and raised in Summerdale and is a proud graduate of East Pennsboro Area School District, Class of 1976. He often reflects on the wonderful childhood he had—filled with close friendships, impactful school experiences, and the guidance of dedicated teachers and coaches who helped shape his path. He credits much of who he is today to those early influences, especially his parents.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Lock Haven University in 1981, he returned home with a desire to give back to the community that helped raise him. He began his career as a substitute teacher and coach within the East Pennsboro district and, in 1991, founded Blue Mountain Lawn Business, which he operated through 2024—continuing part-time while teaching full-time.

In the 1998–1999 school year, he accepted a full-time teaching position at East Pennsboro Area High School, where he remained for 22 years before retiring after the 2019–2020 school year. During his career, he coached cross-country, served many years as assistant track and field coach, and led the team as head coach for four years. He also coached junior high wrestling prior to his full-time teaching role. Throughout his time in education, he was committed to being a positive influence in students’ lives—believing that for some, the classroom might be the best part of their day.

He has been married to Cindy Kauffman Blood since May 1983. Like him, Cindy is a Summerdale native and a 1978 graduate of East Pennsboro. Together, they raised two children—Ryan and Kari—both proud EP graduates. They are now grandparents to six, with two grandchildren currently attending EP Elementary School.

He is a strong advocate for a well-rounded education. While today’s students are often tech-savvy and well-informed, he believes many lack essential social and emotional skills. He emphasizes the importance of teaching resilience—reminding students that life won’t always go their way, and that failure can be a stepping stone to growth. He believes teachers must be allowed to teach without constant disruption and that strong administrative support and fair, consistent discipline are essential for a successful learning environment.

Outside of education, he is a lifelong athlete and passionate about the life lessons learned through sports. He still holds the fastest time ever recorded for the Harrisburg Marathon (since 1981), qualified for the 1984 Olympic Marathon Trials, and was inducted into the West Shore Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for a local church, further demonstrating his commitment to faith, community, and service.

Those who know him recognize his steady values: be genuine, be fair, be present, have fun, and make a positive difference. He lives by the motto: Strive to be better today than you were yesterday, and better tomorrow than you are today. He believes that one day, we’ll all be a memory—so do your best to make it a good one!
